How TDEE is Calculated
Step 1: Calculate BMR
First, we calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation:
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age - 161
Step 2: Apply Activity Factor
Then multiply by your activity level:
- Sedentary: BMR × 1.2
- Lightly Active: BMR × 1.375
- Moderately Active: BMR × 1.55
- Very Active: BMR × 1.725
- Extremely Active: BMR × 1.9
Frequently Asked Questions
What is TDEE?
TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It represents the total number of calories your body burns in a day, including your BMR (calories at rest) and calories burned through physical activity.
Which TDEE formula is most accurate?
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is considered the most accurate for most people. If you know your body fat percentage, the Katch-McArdle formula can be even more precise.
How do I use my TDEE for weight loss?
To lose weight, eat 500 calories less than your TDEE for approximately 1 lb of weight loss per week. For muscle gain, eat 200-300 calories more than your TDEE.
